REGION 1 GOLF DAY

The latest renewal of the William Hill Regional Golf Tournament was held on Wednesday 1st July at the South Herts Golf Club in Totteridge.

Hosted and organised by Andy Hunt (DOM 081) the event proved to be its usual success. A total of 27 players from across the region were competting for one of the 8 places up for grabs in the final that takes places on 5th August at Carden Park nr Chester.

082 was represented by our Commander in Chief Peter, the soon to be departed Ashley Howell and yours truly. Unfortunately, on  a scorching hot day, none of us managed to trouble the scorers and one of our number only managed to reach half distance before succumbing to the heat......(not even the white trousers could save me) All in all a great day was had by all that attended and the story could not yet be over as I have blagged a place in the Region 2 event down in Bristol on the 15th to try and get all the way to the final.

Update from Bristol...........After a long drive to the South West to attend the Region 2 event, I am happy to announce that I managed to qualify for the Tournament Final after finishing in 4th place with 37 Stableford points. Competition was tough, but it was an enjoyable, albeit tiring day all in but the district will be represented at Carden Park on the 5th August!

Match Report

On a wet and windy Sunday morning 082 rallied the troops for the Area 8 inter-district 7 a side football tournament held in Stevenage! Despite a few squad issues we took 8 players all at top fitness and raring to go!

GK Luke (Waltham Abbey)
-agile and a smart shot stopper Hugo Lloris and David de Gea spring to mind

DC Richard (Woolpack) -a hard working organised defender with Ledley King like qualities

DR Siraj (Cheshunt) -a last ditch brave defender reminiscent of a Ferdinand or Terry

DL Kai (Lowden) - a well drilled talker and organiser tactically aware like a Gary Neville

LW Sol (Lowden) great first touch and cross! Very organised! Beckham like!

CM Nick (Ponders End) the engine and most complete player of our outfit! A young Gerrard

AM Peter (DOM) the old head who still has a bit of magic in his boots! Roy Keane in the tackle with a touch of the Scholes about him!

ST Jermain (Hatch Lane) electric pace and a eye for goal! A mixture of Owen and Henry

GAME 1
Despite our enthusiasm we started slowly in our 1st game against Andy Hunt 081 And found ourselves behind early on, when, despite Peter's best efforts to show their big front man down the line, he managed to smash home beating a disappointed Luke at his near post! (Very uncharacteristic error from the William hill number 1) despite our best efforts the early goal proved vital and Andy Hunt's men held on to take the points!

GAME 2
Our next game proved to be the perfect opportunity to get back on track in the group against Maurice O'Neils 083 Team! And we did just that! A strong start saw us take a 2 goal lead with goals from Jermain (hatch lane) and Nick (ponders end) then came a defining moment in the day's events. Their goalkeeper attempted a quick clearance only to find himself finding the feet of Peter on the half way line! With skill and composure and a touch out of his feet! Peter sent the ball flying back over his head to find the roof of the net from the half way line! With at first muted celebrations! He went on to talk about the goal at every opportunity through out the day's events! The game eventually finished 4-0 with an other goal added by Jermain!

GAME 3
Without any time to recover we were thrown into our 3rd game on the bounce against Kanye bainbrigde's 085 team. Wearing their superman tops as a make shift football kit! With plenty of beer bellies on show! Super they weren't! Looking comfortable through 082 found the net 3 times! Displaying a quick pressing passing game! Goals from Peter (2) and a superb bit of Individual skill from Jermain (later to be copied by Peter) see him flick a superb back heel in after a defence splitting threw ball from Nick! leaving the Kiwi DoM realising he should probably stick to cricket and Aussie rules!

After a well deserved break!

GAME 4
Game 4 see us full of confidence and a semi final place in sight! Up against Jason Sharps 084 this a much tighter and cagey affair which saw us take a early lead through Jermain! His electric pace latched on to a pin point ball from Peter (despite my better judgement thinking it was a clearance) to slot home! Despite some top notch defensive work throughout from Richard ,Suraj & Kai, Morrison's Men rallied mid game in what proved to be a bit of a flat spell from the 082 players! A delightful cross from 084 Winger was met by a thumping header down in to the ground leaving Luke no chance! but wait for it.... one of own Richard Coleman! With a header Alan Shearer would of been proud of! The only thing lacking was the famous one arm celebration! Although I must say I see him think about it! This gave us a much needed wake up call and we sparked in to life once again! Mounting pressure from good wide play from Sol and strong running through the middle from Nick see the ball once again find the feet of our seasoned DoM (at the back end of his career) who met the cross from Nick on the half volley! Clinching a 2-1 victory late on and almost sealing a semi-final place!

GAME 5
The gruelling schedule of the group see us with 2 games to go with only one more win needed to make sure of progression through the group stage, the 5th game see us come up against a down and out James (The cat) Morrisons District 086! The 082 team who by this point were a well oiled machine found ourself ahead early in the game once again! With quick fire goals from Jermain and Nick! Now to the copy cat goal! Not to be out done by Jermain. The 082 DoM found himself in the box late on to seal the victory with a exact replay of Jermains back heel, all be it looking like a slow motion replay I may add! Pick that out of the net Mr.Morrison! With the sound of the whistle ringing out! 082 were in the semi finals with a game to spare!

GAME 6
Game 6 see us up against one of the tournament favourites a team fielded from Greenside House in there Adidas black strip and with a few question marks over there employee status! Despite calls for a William Hill payslip! This game went ahead and was a must win in terms of gaining the psychological edge for the latter rounds! The game started cagily with both sides not commiting many men forward and a few hefty tackles flying in (no names mention Peter) the game eventually became stretched as tiredness from the long group stage set in! a expert last ditch block was needed from Siraj to keep the score at 0-0! But pressure finally broke down the 082 defence and the Greenside House team took the lead with a smart passing move finished off inside the box! We found ourself in uncharted territory behind for the 1st time since the 1st game! And despite our efforts to find a equaliser late on we found ourselves leaving gaps at the back for the Greenside House boys to exploit! And only some fine goalkeeping and surely the save of the day kept the score at 1-0. Searching for a leveller and committing too many men forward see the Greenside team break away bearing down on the 082 goal their striker lured Luke off his line only to square the ball to a supporting player to surely put the ball into a empty net! But NO! With all the might in his legs the experienced stopper threw himself to his right and manage to claw the shot on to the cross bar! Smashing down and away! (Gordon Banks like) Despite our best efforts the game drifted by and the early goal from Greenside proved pivotal!

Despite the loss, 082 found themselves topping the group with 4 wins and 2 losses!

And a local derby against Andy hunts 081 awaited! Despite some dodgy organisations of semi-finals! And a chance for 082 to get theie own back after the earlier game ended in a 1 Nil Win for 081!

SEMI-FINAL
Considering all games were refereed by a repesentative from each district! No ref was provided for this grudge match semi-final and that proved to be pivotal! A fisty and tight affair! Everything you expect from a derby game! A game in which, had few if any highlights to share! Tight defending and a chess match like midfield battle kept chances to a minimum! A save from the 082 keeper (Luke) legs charging out his goal one of few chances in the game! Then as the game drew to a close and penalties loomed! The contentious and controversial moment in the game arose! After a goal mouth scramble the ball found itself roll across the area! The 082 goalkeeper quickest to it ,gathered the ball in to his hands only to have it kicked out by the 081 Front man who bundle it over the line! And sheepishly claimed the goal despite knowing he had fouled the keeper! The final whistle went and after much debate and disagreement! Peter the 082 Dom and his team gave in to being cheated and allowed 081 To progress to the final against Greenside House team despite feeling aggrieved! Out of protest the 082 team refused to watch the final and all made our way back home! Not knowing the eventual winners!

Bar being cheated out of our final place! The day was a successful one full of banter and surprisingly some good football played by our lads! On a more sombre note the whole team and possibly district will have to endure Peter bragging about his messi /ronaldo like goals! In which I heard about straight away once seeing him again this week!

We look forward to the next football game or any other social event the district organises and hope more staff  get involved and participate a big thank you goes out to Mr.Jason Sharp for organising the event!  It's never easy.

Thanks to all who participated!
